Senior Specialist, Tax & Risk

Reporting to: Finance Director, Financial Control & Analysis

Department: Finance

Location: McLaren Technology Centre

Purpose of the Role:

To Support the Central finance team in providing a first-class financial service by providing a broad spectrum of tax knowledge & risk governance across multiple disciplinaries. This will also be across race series and will have a dotted line to support the McLaren Group Tax manager. There will be one direct report of the role.

Principal Accountabilities: Leading a small team, you will be part of the finance team, but be expected to reach out to be within the operational element of the business.

Monthly/yearly tasks


Ability to assist with customs issues as they arise, responding and being able to provide options to senior leaders, including working with internal and external logistics as necessary

Ensure the business is completing all customs paperwork correctly,

Oversight and management of foreign VAT reporting and returns ensuring returns are completely accurately and on time,

Ensuring registrations are appropriately maintained and are well documented & governed,

Responsible for the preparation of the yearly R&D tax claim, reviewing documents & ensuring the maximum is claimed,

Maintain the MRL Group risk register, with constant monitoring of new risks and assessing if the controls in place are effective,

Direct liaison with KPMG and the McLaren internal tax function to ensure indirect tax compliance, minimise risk and maximise indirect tax recovery

Assist the Senior Manager in the preparation of year end accounts and Tax pack information, ensuring all journals are posted correctly & accounts reconciled,

Ensuring global mobility of our staff is governed and well documented,

Review of Witholding tax, ensuring submission to the relevant tax authorities,

Preparation and maintenance of documents to ensure tax compliance of all intercompany trading,

Assistance working with the Director and other stakeholders in ensuring tax compliance, and that submissions are made which reduces our risk of penalties

Provide relevant updates to the systems to ensure smooth compliance,

Management of one direct report

Support for ad hoc queries, as required

Developing systems and controls within the department

Overseeing end-to-end tax postings, ensuring that the month end position is correct

Key part of the development of new systems and processes needed within the department,

To identify areas where cost savings can be made,

To contribute to finance team meetings and support the work of other team members as necessary.

Oversee company’s risk assessment policies for tax processes

Maintenance of intercompany agreements

Being on the pulse for changes in real time reporting in foreign countries

Job requirements


Knowledge, Skills and Experience:


Relevant tax qualification

Experience working in a similar role, or working in a tax practice at manager level

A track record of getting things done against tight deadlines

Excellent communication skills and a focus on accuracy.

Have a background in accounting, in order to understand how the processes and systems work
