Purpose of the Role:  

To measure, report, and deliver progress against McLaren Racing’s environmental sustainability metrics and goals, in line with best practice and external standards.  

 

Role Dimensions:  

As the McLaren Racing Sustainability Specialist, you will be principally responsible for measuring, reporting, providing insight into and delivering progress against McLaren Racing’s environmental sustainability metrics (relating to GHG emissions and circularity).  

 

You will support the wider McLaren Team to embed sustainability into day-to-day business activities, and manage projects targeted at reducing McLaren’s environmental impacts. You will also oversee the day-to-day activities of Sustainability Interns and people on work experience placements within the Sustainability team.  

 

This role requires a high degree of flexibility and an agile working style. Approximately 25% of your workload will consist of managing short-term tactical projects, responding to ad-hoc requests and emerging priorities with agility and a winner’s mindset. 

 

Principal Accountabilities:  

  • Act as a Business Partner to Business Performance teams (People, Finance, Procurement, Legal and IT) on sustainability topics, providing subject matter expertise and supporting initiatives that improve McLaren Racing’s environmental performance. 

  • Deliver McLaren Racing’s annual GHG footprint, including data gathering, aggregation and calculation in line with the GHG Protocol Corporate Standard.  

  • Deliver McLaren Racing’s annual circularity metric, including data gathering, aggregation and calculation in line with the F1 Circularity Handbook. 

  • Lead delivery of the third-party assurance process for the GHG footprint in line with ISO14064, acting as the main day-to-day contact with the assurance provider, responding to queries and ensuring that deadlines are met. 

  • Deliver robust and reliable data, insights and visualisations relating to environmental performance to support business cases for sustainability projects, governance reporting, and drafting of McLaren Racing’s annual Sustainability Report. 

  • Submit accurate environmental data to fulfil voluntary external reporting frameworks and regulatory requirements. 

  • These include but are not limited to: UN Sports for Climate Action, SBTi, SECR, TCFD, and Formula 1 & Formula E data requirements. 

  • Support colleagues across McLaren Racing through data analytics, insights and modelling, including GHG forecasting, decarbonisation benchmarking, business case building, and project prioritisation. 

  • Establish and manage a supply chain decarbonisation programme, enabling Purchasing teams to identify opportunities to measure and reduce GHG emissions from purchased goods & services and capital goods.  

  • Support Purchasing teams to embed sustainability requirements in supplier contracts and gather data to measure impact. 

  • Engage with suppliers to realise supply chain decarbonisation and circular economy opportunities. 

  • Act as a representative of the Sustainability team in relevant working groups on infrastructure and campus projects, embedding environmental considerations into project processes and influencing project decisions in favour of sustainability.  

  • Develop and deliver environmental sustainability training /education of McLaren Racing’s Business Performance teams, enabling colleagues to embed sustainability considerations into their decision-making.  

  • Fulfil ad-hoc requests for support from across McLaren Racing, particularly teams in Business Performance. 

  • Oversee the day-to-day activities of Sustainability Interns / people on work experience, providing them with engaging work and supporting their skills and professional development in environmental sustainability. 

Job requirements

Knowledge, Skills and Experience:  

Essential:  

  • Extensive experience in GHG accounting and reporting using recognised standards (GHG Protocol Corporate Standard, ISO 14064, SBTi). 

  • Robust quantitative skill set including experience with:  

    • Testing large data sets for completeness and accuracy.

    • Modelling and forecasting trends based on reasonable assumptions.

    • Extrapolating conclusions based on incomplete information.

    • Data visualisation for a variety of audiences. 

  • High degree of proficiency with Microsoft Excel, and optionally Smartsheet. 

  • Excellent written & spoken communication and stakeholder management skills, and experience interacting with both internal and external stakeholders in pursuit of sustainability outcomes.  

  • Track record of delivery of decarbonisation, circular economy, and other sustainability initiatives / projects, on time and to budget. 

  • Project management experience using standard methodologies and tools (e.g. RACI, Gantt charts, PRINCE2, kanban). 

 

Desirable: 

  • Proficiency with advanced data analysis tools (Alteryx, BigQuery, PowerBI)  

  • Experience drafting supplier contract clauses to support GHG data reporting and supply chain decarbonisation initiatives.  

  • Experience in embedding environmental sustainability criteria into buildings and facilities infrastructure projects.  

  • Team project or line management experience. 

  • Experience in delivering or coordinating sustainability-related training and education.

McLaren Racing is based at the iconic McLaren Technology Centre (MTC) near Woking. Here at McLaren, we offer hybrid working with 3 days a week based in the MTC.

The MTC is connected to Woking mainline station via regular shuttle buses, from which London Waterloo is a 30 minute train ride.
